Third Meeting of Ad-Hoc Book Club: Hate, Inc. by Matt Taibbi

Thursday, September 4 at 7:00pm on Zoom

Join us for the third session of our four-part, ad-hoc book club as we continue reading Hate, Inc.: Why Today’s MediaMakes Us Despise One Another by journalist Matt Taibbi. In this meeting, we’ll discuss Chapters 8-12 (approximately 75 pages), which dive deeper into the mechanisms and incentives behind the media’s role in driving division.  Taibbi’s sharp and often provocative analysis gives us much to consider as Friends—prompting reflection on how we engage with the news and how our responses align (or don’t) with the Quaker SPICES. Whether or not you attended the first or second session, all are welcome.

Painting Day at MFM on Saturday September 6

MFM’s committee room is ready for repainting, and all are welcome to help on September 6, starting at 9:00 AM until the work is finished. Participants may come and go as they please. Remember to bring clothing suitable for painting. All materials are prepared in advance; we just need the willing hands!

Run Richmond 16.19 – MFM is participating again this year on Saturday, September 27

For the third consecutive year, MFM is proud to sponsor students and teachers from MLK Middle School for the Run Richmond 16.19 event. We have an initial mini grant of $250; however, additional individual contributions are essential for continued support.

If you wish to donate, please send a check made out to MFM, or a Venmo contribution (find us at “Midlothian Quakers”), with a note indicating your donation is designated for Run Richmond 16.19. Checks may be placed in the donation box at the meeting house or mailed to Ann Duncan, MFM’s treasurer, at Midlothian Friends Meeting, PO Box 1003, Midlothian VA  23113. Last year, we successfully raised $800, which funded 16vouchers for MLK students and teachers.

The Run Richmond 16.19 event features a 16.19-kilometer course that highlights over 400 years of Black History along a unique route through Richmond. The event will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2025,culminating in a festival at Kanawha Plaza. This is an inclusive and enjoyable occasion, and all interested parties are encouraged to participate.

To register as a walker, runner, or volunteer at the MFM Water Station, providing water and energy bars to participants, please contact Lucretia Farago at lsfarago@gmail.com.

The vision for Run Richmond 16.19 is to commemorate the sacrifices and achievements our African American brothers and sisters have made to our nation and celebrate Unity in Diversity.  We need this now more than ever!

In Friendship,

Claudia Farr
